Heather Anne Corrales: A brief look

Born and raised in Albany, New York, Heather Anne is a Filipino-American illustrator. It is unknown in her early life when she was introduced to art, but art did play a prominent role in her life. Outside of academics, Heather would take art classes within the local art studios in Albany, most notably the Albany Art Room, exploring various forms of two-dimensional and three-dimensional art that include drawing and clay sculpture. Entertainment and media also played a role in Heather's strive in creating art, especially East Asian media, particularly Japanese media with the influence of anime and manga. Heather's curiosity in art would return in her early teens and started diving into that curiosity by taking art classes in high school. After graduating high school, Heather would then go to Russell Sage College to continue studying in art.

During her time in high school art classes, Heather's earlier art mainly focused on light-hearted topics with some also diving into more bittersweet tone based on subject matter and palette choice. Some early instance of Heather diving into more darker themes trace back to her final year of high school, where 2 pieces tackle on themes of mental illness. Upon entrance into college, Heather did continue to play around with different concepts in her first year, but didn't have many artworks that tackled different concepts. It was not until Heather's second year of college she began making artwork that tackled with different topics. Starting with heavy subject matter alongside mental illness, such as toxic relationships and the deeper portrayal of the mind clouded in illness. Heather would then shift her subject matter slightly by continuing to create artwork based on topics that deeply mattered to her but started basing it around personal experiences. Started simple by talking about the things she has a strong dislike for and her feelings, in a piece titled "Angry That You Exist". That would gradually flow into diving deeper into more personal matters, such as other's expectation of someone, jealously of someone, and looking back on the past.

Heather continues to create work within these topics as she begins to navigate what more can she touch on in her practice, in preparation to branch out in her practice. She currently strives to illustrate the world around her and her experiences in conjunction with helping others on their artistic journeys.
